Zambia has experienced erratic rains since the start of the season as a result of the El-Nino weather pattern. The poor rainfall pattern is expected to continue until April, 2016.

Zambia Meteorological Department Jacob Nkomoki said farmers should plant early maturing crops because the planting season has been shortened.

In a statement on the current weather pattern, the official said the country was currently under a dry spell which has led to most parts of the country not to receive normal rain.

“The current dry spell has mainly affected the southern parts of Zambia, that is the area covering Southern, Western, Lusaka, Central and Eastern provinces. Most of these places have recorded less than 40 mm of rainfall,” he said.

The official further said Lusaka, Southern and Western provinces were likely to have less rainfall as a result of the El-Nino weather pattern.

In September last year, the meteorological body had projected that the country would receive normal to below normal rainfall in the 2015/2016 rainy season on account of the El-Nino weather pattern. Enditem
