The Zambian leader released the prisoners in accordance with prerogative of mercy powers accorded to him in the country’s constitution, according to a statement released by presidential spokesperson Amos Chanda.

The Zambian leader said he decided to release the prisoners in order to avail them an opportunity to reform and return to normal society.

“It is my given hope that the recipients of this pardon will do their very best to contribute to society positively as a way of paying back for the mercy that society has shown to them,” he said.

Among those released include two elderly inmates aged 75 and 83 respectively.
