Zambian President Edgar Lungu on Friday called for responsible use of social media in the country, saying the current trends of abusing the social media platforms were not helping the country.

Lungu, in his address to parliament on the progress made in the application of national values and principles which was also broadcast live on state television, said he was concerned with the continued use of social media to spread hate speech and commit cybercrimes.

The Zambian leader said people should be wary of the vices on social media.

According to him, the enactment of cybercrimes and data protection bills meant to bring culprits of hate speech and cybercrime to book has reached an advanced stage and appealed to lawmakers to support the bills once they are tabled in parliament.

The Zambian leader said every citizen has a role to play in promoting unity in the country. Enditem
