The head of Zambia’s public service on Monday called on the accountant-general’s office to monitor compliance by various government departments to austerity measures.

Simon Miti, Secretary to the Cabinet, said cabinet has observed serious financial mismanagement in ministries which have affected service delivery, adding that the government expects accountants to provide accurate accounting information to facilitate decision making that will result in compliance to austerity measures.

Speaking when he addressed directors of finance from various ministries, the official said accountants are also expected to provide sound advice to controlling officers on implementation of austerity measures.

Cabinet, he said, expects accountants to play an advisory role in the allocation of public resources during the budgeting process to ensure attainment of more institutional performance outputs with optimal allocation of resources.

He further said cabinet expects accountants to provide informative reports and accurate accounting information timely to facilitate decision making that will result in compliance to austerity measures. Enditem
