The Zambian government on Wednesday announced a reduction in user fees in all public colleges as part of government efforts to ensure that every child acquires quality education.

Minister of General Education David Mabumba said the decision was part of education reforms embarked upon by the government in order to make education affordable for all.

He told reporters during a press briefing that students in boarding at colleges will now be required to pay 1,800 Zambian Kwacha (about 140 U.S. dollars) from about 4,000 Kwacha (about 310 U.S. dollars) previously while day scholars will now be paying 800 Kwacha (about 62 U.S. dollars).

He said the revised fees were with effect from this month and called on all stakeholders to support government efforts to make education accessible for all.
