Zambia recorded 234 road traffic accidents during the Christmas holiday, resulting in 22 deaths, the police said on Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Esther Mwaata-Katongo said the road accidents were recorded between 6 p.m. on December 22 and 6 a.m. on December 26.

Of the total accidents recorded, 18 were fatal with 22 deaths while 32 were serious road traffic accidents in which 52 people were seriously injured and 68 were slight-injury accidents, in which 90 people sustained minor injuries.

According to the police spokesperson, the country recorded an increase in road traffic accidents during the Christmas holiday this year compared to the same period last year, when 201 accidents were recorded out of which 15 were fatal, with 20 people dead.

She added that the general situation in the country during the holiday was peaceful and thanked Zambians for celebrating Christmas in a peaceful manner. Enditem
