An alliance of 10 opposition parties in Zambia have decided to join hands and work as one team to fight the country’s governing party, a communique issued by the parties said on Monday.

The political parties have agreed to work together in restoring fundamental human rights, liberties and freedoms which they claim have been eroded by the current government.

“In order to achieve our common goal of delivering a better Zambia for all, we have resolved to focus on the issues that united us rather than issues that divide us,” the communique said.

It however added that the decision to work together does not entail a merger of the 10 political parties, adding that the collaboration is a demonstration that coexistence is vital in a properly functioning democracy.

The parties said the alliance will ensure that the parties serve the needs of the country effectively by offering checks and balances to the current government.

The parties expressed concern that the democratic space in the country has shrunk and that political intolerance has become the order of the day. Enditem
