The country’s tax collection agency, the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) has successfully secured the conviction of 28 wholesalers, retailers, service providers and individuals for tax offenses such as failure to use cash registers, failure to issue tax invoices, false representation, smuggling and forgery.

“Following numerous reports of non-compliance with various tax statutes, the Zambia Revenue Authority was instructed to strengthen surveillance and compliance activities to ensure that conviction of offenders was secured as swiftly as possible,” said Secretary to the Treasury Fred Yamba in an emailed statement.
The conviction happened from January to October this year, he added.

The official has since appealed to the tax collection agency to enhance tax education and also sustain surveillance and tax compliance programs and ensure that all tax offenders are taken to court.

He said this would ensure that revenues belonging to the state are protected and timely paid to relevant revenue collection agencies. “The treasury will not tolerate disregard for tax laws,” he said. Enditem
