But the former African champions do not yet know where they will play the second leg of their tie.

“We are waiting for CAF’s decision whether we will play in Cairo or not,” Zamalek coach Hassan Shehata said.

Hamis Kiiza put Young Africans in front with a fabulous shot from outside the area which cannonned off the underside of the bar in the 36th minute.

They held on until 15 minutes from time, when Amr Zaki dribbled past two defenders and shot low into the corner with a fine finish to put Zamalek in pole position to go through.

“This is good result for us, we were playing against a good team, a good coach, but we played very well – I wanted this result,” Shehata told the BBC.

Elsewhere, Kenya’s Tusker failed to take their chance to use home advantage in their tie with APR.

The game finished 0-0 and APR will be confident of making progress.

In other results, Uganda Revenue Authority beat Correctional Services of Lesotho 3-0 in the first leg of their tie – Manco Kaweesa, Sula Bagala and Augustin Nsumba got the goals.
