Selected youth from three districts in Tamale have attended a job and entrepreneurship fair to network and share ideas to help them start their own business.YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

It was organised over the weekend by Youth Empowerment for Life (YEfL), a Tamale-based youth development non-governmental organisation, and attended by 80 youth drawn from Tamale Metro, Savelugu/Nanton Municipality and Kumbungu District.

Prior to the job and entrepreneurship fair, the participants attended a 14-day boot camp where they learnt about time-tested business models to equip them with requisite skills to enable them to successfully start and manage their own business.

The boot camp, developed by YEfL, is an alternative model for youth training and capacity building in an intensive manner to link them to existing opportunities to become self-employed through their own generated income from the Village Savings and Loans Associations.

Mr Salifu Mahama, Programmes Manager of YEfL, said 95 per cent of participants at the boot camp submitted their own business plans to YEfL adding; ?the boot camp model has introduced the Village Savings and Loans Associations to inculcate savings culture amongst the youth, the proceeds of which could be used as start-up capital.?

Mr Mahama advised the youth to employ their creative abilities in their various communities into starting their own businesses instead of migrating down south for non-existent jobs.

He called on government to create the enabling environment to ensure the growth and expansion of the private sector to absorb the unemployed youth.

He appealed to all to patronise locally produced goods to improve as well as strengthen local business.

Mr Alhassan Abdulai, one of the beneficiaries, said the boot camp and the job and entrepreneurship fair had helped build his knowledge and confidence to start his own business.

Mr Abdulai said this year he had cultivated one acre of rice whiles plans were afoot to start poultry production.
