The youth wing of the NPP, Young Patriots, has sent a congratulatory message to the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) and the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA) for effectively interceding to end the impasse between Government and Multimedia Group Limited.

It would be recalled that through the joint effort between the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) and the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA), Government ended its boycott of Multimedia Group Limited (MGL) last Friday.

Below is the full statement issued by the Young Patriots of NPP

The Young Patriots of the NPP congratulate the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) and the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA) for their work in ending the wicked attempt by the Mills/Mahama government to stifle the Multi-Media Group, and hence stifle press freedom in Ghana.

The attempt to ban the Multi-Media Group from coverage and reportage of official events amounted to preventing the media from executing their constitutional mandate of holding government accountable and responsible to the people of Ghana, (Article 162, 5).

The further attempt to deny the Multi-Media Group advertising, also amounted to harassment and penalization of the press for their views and contents of their publication, contrary to the constitution (Article 162, 4)

Ghana has moved a long way from the days of newspaper licensing and criminal prosecution of the media. The action against the Multi-Media Group is retrograde and would have taken Ghana to those bad old days of media repression and suppression of press freedom.

It is a most shameful conduct. No wonder we have suffered the disgust of both local and international media and civil society organisations.

The Mills/Mahama government attempted to explain their retrograde action by resort to the excuse of so-called unfair reporting on the part of Multi-Media group.

This is palpably false and childish. There are media houses where slant of reportage is clearly against the government and who have not hidden it. It is very clear that the despicable action of government is due to the suspension of Mr. Bobie Ansah from the Asempa FM political programme, Ekosi Sen.

This clearly demonstrates the importance of Mr. Bobie Ansah in the dirty propaganda campaign/strategy of the Mills/Mahama government against the NPP flag bearer, and vindicates the long-held suspicion of right thinking members of society in this regard.

The Mills/Mahama NDC government needs to realize that elections are won on good works by government and not by propaganda, lies, and character assassination.
