Some residents of Yendi Municipality in the Northern Region have expressed profound joy and satisfaction at the selection of a new Overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Na Abukari Mahama (II).

They commended the Kingmakers of Dagbon for their honesty and transparency in the selection of the new Overlord of the area and called on government to lift the curfew on Yendi and its environs.

They expressed their excitement at separate interviews with the Ghana News Agency at Yendi.

Hajia Fatima Mahamudu, a Trader at Yendi said she was very excited at the honesty and transparency displayed by the Kingmakers in selecting a new Overlord for the area, urging everyone to give their unconditional support and commitment to the new King to move Dagbon forward.

She commended the Committee of Eminent Chiefs for successfully resolving the Dagbon chieftaincy crisis and restoring peace to the area and advised the youth of the area to avoid engaging in any negative acts that could affect their future.

Mrs Nashiru Mariya, a housewife, expressed gratitude to God for making it possible for a new King to be selected because they had difficulty in settling disputes among themselves, since they had to consult both royal gates for redress.

Abdullai Iddrisu, a Trader said they had prayed to God for peace, and that, the enskinment of a new King was a source of hope for the people of Dagbon.

Mr Oheneba Nuaku Mainu, a businessman at Yendi, said business activities in the municipality was going on well compared to the previous week, urging residents to continue to embrace peace to help attract investors and traders to the area to enhance sustainable development.

Mr Sintaro Mahama, National Vice President of Dagbang Forum called on the youth of Dabgon to be part of the coronation of the new Overlord of the area to promote peace, unity and development.

He said the work of Dagbon Forum had just started because the group would move forward to look at development initiatives, reconciliation and peace building initiatives, economic empowerment initiatives, promotion of the Dagbon culture among others.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mr Mohammed Yusif Tanko, Public Relations Officer of the Northern Region Police Command said necessary security measures had been put in place to ensure a peaceful outdooring ceremony of the new Ya-Na today, January 25.

Last Friday, January 18, the Kingmakers of Dagbon selected Yoo-Naa Abukari Mahama II as the new Ya-Na to succeed the late Ya-Na Yakubu Andani (II), who died in 2002.

The new Ya-Na was selected following the performance of funerals of the two late Overlords of the Dagbon Traditional Area, Ya-Na Mahamadu Abdulai (IV) and Ya-Na Yakubu Andani (II), in line with the roadmap for peace in Dagbon outlined by the Committee of Eminent Chiefs.

The new Ya-Na has undergone all the necessary traditional and customary rites of Dagbon and will be outdoored today, January 25, at the forecourt of the Gbewaa Palace at Yendi.
