The Gender-based Violence Circuit Court has remanded a 40 year old mother into police custody until February 16 2015, for causing unlawful harm to her son. The accused, Mary Timah, bizarrely inflicted injuries on her 14 year old son with a hot electric iron. His crime was that he had allegedly stolen her Ghc20.

Mary Timah pleaded not guilty to a count of causing harm to the victim. The Prosecutor, Inspector Kofi Atimbiri, told the court, the accused resides at Osu-Accra together with the victim and his two other siblings.

He said on Saturday February 7, the accused returned home around 8.00pm and noticed that an amount of Ghc20 she had kept in her wardrobe had gone missing.

Inspector Atimbiri says Mary Timah, without any evidence immediately accused his 14 year old son as the one who broke into the wardrobe to steal the money.

She then locked up the victim in a room and wickedly assaulted him by placing a hot electric iron on his cheek, ear, neck and hand which resulted in severe injuries.

The prosecutor said the victim managed to escape from the barbaric act to the police station. He was then rushed to the police hospital, where he was admitted for days. Inspector Atimbiri said Mary Timah, was later arrested and charged with the offence of causing unlawful harm.

Hearing has been adjourned to Monday February 16, 2015.
