The telecommunications giant has adjudged ‘Wheelow’ App, as the ultimate winner of the MTN APPS Challenge version 3.0 Competition in Accra.

‘Wheelow’ a 3D game app developed won the ultimate additional prize of GH¢ 20, 000 and a plaque with what was already won in the category stage.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MTN Ghana, Ebenezer Asante in a statement said, in the digital economy internet usage is driven by the use of mobile applications because of the increasing number of smart devices.

In view of that, he noted, MTN as a company set out to identify innovative and locally relevant mobile applications in a competition.

The competition was initiated to encourage local apps developers to develop applications that are locally relevant to MTN’s subscribers and acceptable internationally.

He said, the developers went through painstaking processes to develop Apps that sought to address problems that confronted society, using technology.

This edition of the challenge was under the theme, “Creating awareness of the relevance of the internet in a connected society with focus on innovative and locally relevant mobile apps in Ghana.”

Ebenezer Asante said billions of apps were downloaded daily around the world and as a telecommunications company; they had a responsibility to ensure that Ghana played a significant role in the apps industry, hence the challenge.

“As the leading mobile telecommunications company in Ghana, MTN deems it as a responsibility to ensure that Ghana plays significant role in the Apps developing industry. In view of this, the MTN Apps challenge Version 3.0 was geared towards the search for mobile Applications that focused on Business, Sports, Lifestyle, Games and Entertainment,” he said.

He also indicated that MTN recognises the importance of the use of technology as a tool to promote human resource development, since applications play a big role in all aspects of peoples’ lives.

The MTN Apps challenge which was launched in 2013, has discovered very innovative local apps such as Setriakor Nyomi’s Oware 3D App and Nana Ekow Taylor and Friends’ ‘Buzztrick’ App which emerged winners for the Version 1.0 and 2.0 competition respectively, with the Oware 3D App receiving more than 50,000 downloads so far.

Meanwhile, for its 3.0 edition, MTN introduced Business App developing in order to come out with apps that support individual businesses and SMEs.

MTN in this edition of the Apps challenge is able to harness local talents in applications development since many and different of application varieties it received hits 40 apps from individuals and group developers.

On his part, Noel Kojo-Ganson as its Acting Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) said, the acquisition of 4G LTE license by MTN in December 2015 to offer robust internet connectivity for its customers hits about 60 sites and are currently under test in four regions of Ghana ahead of its commercial launch.

He said MTN was committed to building vital infrastructure to support the provision of essential services to its mobile subscribers across the country, adding that the Company’s continuous growth in mobile subscription was as a result of the introduction of innovative services and the quest to meet its customers’ needs, explaining that, the Company spent $67.5 million dollars to secure the 4G spectrum from the National Communication Authority (NCA).

He said, technology was a driver of efficiency and productivity that enhanced the quality of lives and improved socio-economic development; therefore, the 4G network would ensure that Ghanaian gained immeasurable benefits in the fast growing data revolution.

The 4G network is the latest advanced data communication technology, which offers download and upload speeds faster than the 3G.

Using 4G also means that users can download large email attachments or other contents from the Internet faster.

At the end of the event, ‘Wheelow’ emerged winner in the Games and Entertainment category, while the Business category award went to Gh Payroll.

‘Donatio app’ won the Lifestyle category awards.

‘Campus Run’ App was awarded as the most promising Apps developer, while Ashanti Games app received the most challenging app award.
