The Hammers have contacted United about the defender and are poised to make an opening bid of £10m.United boss Jose Mourinho has decided to axe Smalling and told him he’s no longer part of his plans.

But it remains to be seen if United will accept £10m for Smalling, with Old Trafford bosses valuing him closer to the £15m mark.

United will complete the signing of Sweden’s Victor Lindelof in the next 24 hours, leaving Smalling surplus to requirements.

United have agreed a fee of £31m with Benfica for Lindelof, who will travel to Manchester today to undergo a medical and thrash out a long-term deal.

The Swedish international, 22, will become Jose Mourinho’s first summer signing.
Mourinho targeted the centre back from the moment he took charge of United last summer and came close to signing him in January.But United agreed to let him remain in Portugal in return for being able to sign him once the season had finished.

Mourinho wants Lindelof to partner Eric Bailly in the heart of his United defence, with Phil Jones providing back-up.

Mourinho has decided Smalling is not good enough and will sell him to the highest bidder, with West Brom and Everton also showing interest.Smalling joined United from Fulham in 2010 and has gone on to make almost 250 appearances.

He has won two Premier League titles and both domestic Cups in seven seasons at Old Trafford.

Smalling was also voted United ‘Players’ Player of the Year’ last season following a consistent campaign under former boss Louis van Gaal.
