The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will abolish international roaming charges from the year 2020, according to a press release reached Xinhua on Tuesday.

“This implies that all ECOWAS citizens traveling within the sub-region from next year will not experience any international roaming tariffs, but at local rates,” said Ghana’s Minister of Communications Ursula Owusu Ekuful.

Ekuful said the governments of all ECOWAS countries were working to put in place the regulatory legal and administrative framework by December 31 this year.

Ekuful said the ECOWAS free-roaming initiative was proposed in 2016 and adopted in 2017 and it would create more convenience for ECOWAS citizens and investment avenues as well.

She added that the telecommunications environment would be revolutionized as the new system operates.

ECOWAS is a political and economic union of 15 countries located in the West Africa sub-region, which was formed to promote cooperation and integration to create an economic and monetary union for promoting economic growth and development. Enditem
