Sunyani, (B/A) April 10, GNA – Wesley Cathedral of Sunyani Circuit of the Methodist Church on Monday emerged champions in the football category of an inter-circuit sports competition to round off the Easter festivities in the Sunyani Municiplaity.
The Wesley lads beat their counterparts of Emmanuel Methodist Church of Tanoso 1-0 in the final football match at the Coronation Park in Sunyani.
The competition, which involved six disciplines, attracted both the youth of the Church and the women including some as old as 50 years.
The Wesley Cathedral soccer team, had earlier beating Fiapre Calvary Methodist Church of Fiapre 1-0, last year’s champions, who also had a technical walk-over when Goshen Methodist Church from Ohene Djan at Abesim  failed to turn up.
Wesley again defeated Mount Olivet Methodist Church at Baakoniaba 1-0 in an encounter that proved to be the grueling match in the pairings during the elimination stages of the competition.
Results of other matches were Good Shepherd Church of Abesim bowed 0-2 on penalties to Emmanuel Methodist Church of Tanoso, who also won 3-2 over Estate Calvary Methodist Church in another penalty shoot out.
The Estate side, however, clinched a sweet 2-0 win over their counterparts from Dumasua in their second match in the competition.
Other games played were draughts, oware, ludo, volleyball and table tennis, but they were all contested on non-scoring basis.
Besides the football category, draughts became the second most attractive as Wesley Cathedral’s Adjei Nimoh displayed tremendous skills to beat all opponents who faced him.
Amponsah of the Wesley side was adjudged the “best footballer” of the competition.
Among the hundreds of Church members who watched the special games were Mr. Kwadwo Adjei-Darko, former Member of Parliament for Sunyani West and Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr. Ankamah Kyeremeh, former and pioneer District Chief Executive (DCE) for Sunyani West.
