Wa Municipality has launched an ambitious campaign to regain its status as Ghana’s cleanest city, a distinction last achieved in 2006.
The Wa Municipal Assembly initiated this effort on Saturday, 13 July 2025, with a large-scale community cleanup exercise across all 31 electoral areas. The initiative, termed the “Mayor’s Major Cleanup Exercise: Operation Clean Your Frontage,” aims to reignite community spirit and foster consistent sanitation practices.
Municipal Chief Executive Alhaji Nura Issah Danwanaa spearheaded the event, which saw residents compete to thoroughly clean their localities. The exercise focused on collective action, encouraging widespread participation to address accumulated waste and improve public spaces. Nayiri/Limanyiri Electoral Area was declared the cleanest participating community, setting a benchmark for future efforts.
Alhaji Nura Issah Danwanaa reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to restoring Wa’s former sanitation standing. “We once won this in 2006 as the cleanest city in Ghana, and we believe that we can attain this feat again,” the MCE stated. He emphasized that the cleanup is a sustained effort, not a single event, designed to precede the national monthly sanitation observance. The Assembly seeks to lead by example ahead of the National Sanitation Day held on the first Saturday of each month.
The campaign centers on motivating residents and businesses to regularly maintain their immediate surroundings. Community leaders from Nayiri/Limanyiri cited early mobilization and strong teamwork as key to their success, with residents clearing gutters, sweeping streets, and properly disposing of waste. Other electoral areas have committed to intensifying their efforts in upcoming exercises, aiming to surpass Nayiri/Limanyiri.
Monthly cleanups are now scheduled for the first Saturday of every month. The Wa Municipal Assembly expects this ongoing initiative to significantly enhance public health, prevent disease, and rebuild the municipality’s reputation for cleanliness and civic pride.
