The Ugandan Rugby Union has confirmed that the national team will take part in the 2019 Africa Rugby Sevens Championship scheduled to be held in Johannesburg, South Africa from Nov. 8-9.

Ramzy Olinga, chief executive officer of the Union, told Xinhua in an interview on Wednesday that taking part in the tournament will give younger players international exposure.

“The team only returned from the Safari Sevens tournament in Kenya on Monday, but will regroup next week,” added Olinga.

He said it is unfortunate some players picked up injuries in Kenya last week.

He noted that team captain Michael Wokorach will have to pass fitness tests to be cleared to prepare for the tournament.

The 2019 Africa Men’s Sevens will also double as a qualifier for the 2020 Olympic Games that will be held in Tokyo, Japan. The winner of the African championship will earn a direct slot at the summer world event.

The 14 teams that will take part include Kenya, Uganda, Madagascar, Zambia, Tunisia, Senegal, Morocco, Namibia, Ghana, Botswana, Mauritius, Cote d’Ivoire, Nigeria and 2018 champions Zimbabwe.
