The student body of Ghana’s Premier University, University of Ghana has declared their unflinching support for, wife of the late MP for Ayawaso West Wougon Constituency Hon. Emmanuel Kyeremateng Agyarko, Madam Lydia Alhassan affectionately called Maa Lydia, as the preferred candidate to occupy the vacant seat.

This was revealed in a speech delivered by the President of the Student Representative Council of the University of Ghana, Sylvester Amoako who spoke to delegates of the ruling New Patriotic Party from the eleven (11) electoral areas, who will be participating in the primaries to elect their candidate.

According to the UG SRC President, Madam Lydia Alhasssan is the right candidate to occupy the seat because of her contribution to the development of the youth of the area especially the students. She has over the years demonstrated that she is a mother for all and a strong pillar of hope for the students. Mr. Amoako stressed that Maa Lydia’s kind and selfless nature in ensuring that the welfare of students remains a top priority is one of her many attributes that has won the hearts of many people, both the young and the old.

The UG SRC President in his message to the delegates noted that it is very important for the party to consider electing candidates who is familiar with the students of the university, as according to Sylvester Amoako, students from the university over the years play a critical role in deciding who wins the parliamentary seat in the constituency. It is therefore crucial for the NPP to consider electing active students from the university as parliamentary candidates.

According to some students, Madam Lydia Alhassan on numerous occasions showed great concern for the welfare of the students, held many interactive meetings, helped in shaping the attitudes and perception of many students, hence she is the one they know and are willing to support, thus the surest way for the NPP to retain the Ayawaso West Wuogon seat is to elect Maa Lydia as their parliamentary candidate.

The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has given approval for six persons who filled their nominations to vie for the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency seat following the death of the Member of Parliament for the area Hon. Emmanuel Kyeremateng Agyarko whoes demise occurred on the November 21, 2018.

The six includes Edward Agyekum Kufour, son of former President John Agyekum Kufuor, Lydia Alhassan Agyarko, a wife of the late MP, Madam Victoria Esinam Ansah Offei, Assembly Member for Legon Electoral Area, Samuel Amankwah, a former constituency youth organizer, Yaa Aboagye and Ato Williams.

The Electoral Commission has set Thursday, January 31, 2019, as the date for the Ayawaso West-Wuogon constituency by-election. The date was agreed upon at an emergency meeting of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) on Monday, December 24.
