The United States on Wednesday welcomed Somali Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire’s announcement of the council of ministers, which it said would quickly help in addressing myriad challenges facing the Horn of Africa nation.

A statement from the American embassy in Somalia lauded Khaire for his effort to create the government promptly to hasten the new administration’s ability to address the country’s critical security and humanitarian challenges.

“We urge Parliament to move quickly to confirm the nominees. The inclusion of six women and several minorities as Cabinet Ministers is welcome as a move towards a government more representative of the Somali people,” the statement said.

Washington said it looked forward to working with the new government to create a peaceful and prosperous Somalia.

The Somalia PM on Tuesday announced a 27-member cabinet that saw him reinstate certain ministers from his predecessor’s cabinet.

Women got six ministerial posts, an increase in women quota in the executive branch, compared to the previous administrations.

The nomination is subject to approval from Somalia’s Federal Parliament on March 30 before assuming executive mandate. Enditem
