The U.S. army said on Friday it has killed one al-Shabab militant in a precision airstrike on Wednesday in southern Somalia.

The United States Africa Command (U.S. AFRICOM) said in a statement the airstrike was carried out in collaboration with the Somali government near Tortoroow, an al-Shabab stronghold.

U.S. AFRICOM vowed it would continue to work with its partners to transfer the responsibility for long-term security in Somalia from the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) to the Somali government and its member states.

“Currently, we assess no civilians were injured or killed as a result of this airstrike,” according to the statement.

The strike came as the allied forces have stepped up security operations across the Horn of Africa nation, killing insurgents and clearing all illegally manned roadblocks in the region. Enditem
