Two Saudi policemen were killed in a gun attack Wednesday in the capital, Riyadh, the official Saudi Press Agency reported.

The policemen died when gunmen opened fire on their patrol, in the east of the city, from a passing car at about 1:30 am (2230 GMT Tuesday), according to the report.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

Attacks on security forces are rare in the Saudi capital, although police have regularly clashed with demonstrators and alleged gunmen in the restive, Shiite-majority Eastern Province.
