Mr. Ishmael Godwin Archton-Tettey, the Head of Department of Languages at Akatsi College of Education, has urged teachers to teach pupils how to pronounce words correctly for improved reading skills.

Speaking, as a resource person, at the third spelling bee and reading festival of Compassion International for some 300 children from 14 communities within the Tongu area, Mr. Archton-Tettey said, “A wrong pronunciation and spelling of words negatively affects the child’s ability to read well. There is, therefore, the need for all of us, especially teachers, to help the child to learn to pronounce and to spell words correctly. ”

Mr. Anthony Kwaku Amoah, a Public Relations Officer of Ghana Education Service (GES), who chaired the function, thanked teachers for their hard work and urged parents and other stakeholders to intensify their support services to children in education.

Speaking on the theme, “Shaping the future today through reading”, Madam Rosemond Nutifafa Adanuti, who is a teacher and counsellor, told parents to pay more attention to the education of their children for better life.

Mr. Richard Baku, the Partnership Facilitator of the Tongu Cluster of Projects of Compassion International, said his outfit had supported about 4,000 underprivileged children in education since 2012 and that it needs the support of stakeholders to reach out to other needy children.

Kpoviadzi won both the 3-5 year and 6-11 year groups for spelling, and again won the reading contest for the 3-5 year group as Mafi-Anfoega won it for the 12 years plus category. Asiekpe and Dove won the reading for the 6-11 year and 12 years plus categories respectively.

Compassion International, a non-profit-making Christian-based organisation, has been operating in seven out of the ten regions of Ghana, including Volta Region, to take children out of poverty and to use education to support them to be useful adults in the future.

School bags, reading books and certificates were given to all the contestants as the winner communities took trophies.
