The?National Democratic Congress (NDC) has settled on the?Ashanti regional capital, Kumasi as the ideal venue for its special delegates? congress. The Congress will give the party the opportunity to endorse President John Mahama as the party’s flagbearer for the 2012 presidential elections. Speaking to some party executives on the matter, they noted that the party settled on September 1st to enable the NDC, and the flagbearer some time to campaign before December. The decision according to them is also in accordance with the party?s constitution.

The special delegates? congress has become?necessary?by the demise of President John Evans Atta Mills who had been elected as the party?s flagbearer at the Sunyani congress.

According to the Ashanti regional chairman of theNDC, Joseph Yamin ?indicated that lots of factors were considered in selecting the region, noting that one of such factors has to do with the fact that the region is a central point in the country for everybody coming in from across the country.

?In terms of accessibility, accommodation and the like I think the region has them all, also considering the fact that we have just two weeks for the congress.?

Mr. Yamin, dispelled suggestions that the NDC decided on the Ashanti region because it is the stronghold of the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) and it is an attempt to woo voters in that part of the country.

He stressed that he could’nt share in the idea that the region is the fortress of the main opposition, adding that ?we?d all see the crowd that would turn up and this would prove the dominance of the NDC here in the region. People would know that the Ashanti region does not belong to the NPP.?
