Nigeria’s electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission, had declared the main governorship election conducted on Dec. 5 and Dec. 6 “inconclusive”, on account of violence and irregularities in Southern Ijaw local district, a riverine area of the province. The electoral body said the rerun election would take place on Jan. 9.

We should be interested in asking some people who should be explaining how they came about sensitive documents,” the governor said, urging the national government and security agencies to create a good environment and a level playing for the electoral process to succeed.

“Our national security establishment must have their eyes on the ball by securing this country within and without. We are available to ensure that our country is safe because you cannot talk of security until every part of the country is safe,” said Dickson, who is seeking re-election.

Due to official results collated, the candidate representing the governing Peoples Democratic Party had already won six out of seven local districts in which election was conducted.

He accused supporters of the opposition All Peoples Congress party in the district of causing the violence that marred the electoral process and urged security agencies to ensure violence is nipped in the bud as the Nigerian state looks forward to concluding the two-horse race without bloodletting.

“I urged the electoral body to declare me winner of that election because I have clearly won it. The right thing to do for the opposition candidate is to concede defeat to me,” Dickson told Xinhua in an interview.

Responding to the call for adequate security during the rerun polls, Nigeria’s electoral chief, Mahmood Yakubu, said proper arrangement has made been made to that effect.

“The lead agency for election security, because it is a civil duty, is the Nigerian Police. Where they need to call for support from any other security agency, the Police are at liberty to do so,” he said. Enditem
