Lt. Gen. Joseph Henry Smith ? Former Minister of Defence

Lieutenant General Joseph Henry Smith (Rtd), former Minister of Defence, has assured Ghanaians of adequate security after the Supreme Court?s verdict on the 2012 presidential election petition.

He said the security forces were on top of their job in maintaining the peace and stability of the nation, and would deal ruthlessly with anyone who would try to create troubles.

Lt Gen. Smith gave the assurance in an exclusive interview with the Ghana News Agency at Burma Camp in Accra, on the sidelines of the Eid-ul-Fitr prayers marking the climax of this year?s Ramadan.

The former Defence Minister said: ?I will assure Ghanaians that the government is not playing with security in the country; the security services are ready to take care of any eventualities that would come in the aftermath of the SC?s verdict.

?I am confident that all the peace campaign messages have gone down well with Ghanaians,? he said.

?Ghana has come too far in democratic governance; we don?t have to destroy what we have built.

?What is happening at the Supreme Court is a normal constitutional process; we should accept the verdict of the court.

?Let?s have the nation at heart, we are one people, Islam stands for peace and let?s all appreciate peace,? he said.

Lt. Gen. Smith said patience, self-control and tolerance is what the country needed to build the nation; adding that, ?we should exercise patience.?
