If you’re a speed freak and there’s no end to your lust for raw, unadulterated power and adrenaline, then this might just be the car for you

Since its introduction in 1972, the BMW 5 series has evolved into a serious player in the mid-size luxury car segment. The latest generation (codenamed the F10), rides on a shortened platform of current generation 7 series (F01), the flagship of the BMW brand. The spotlight is on the latest variant of the M5 saloon — the most powerful variant of the 5 series line up — which is designed to combine everyday practicality and blistering raw performance in a single package.

The new Bmw M5 is powered by a twin-turbo 4.4Litre V8 power plant, which also powers the X5 M and X6 M. It generates 560 horse-power and 500 Lb-ft of torque (30% more than its predecessor). This power plant is paired to a 7 speed automatic transmission, which channels this insane amount of power to the rear wheels, the power train combination propels this brute from 0-100km under 3.8seconds, a figure that will put some supercars to shame. It has a stiffer suspension and bigger brakes to help control the increased amount of power, top speed is electronically limited to 250 kph for safety reasons. With the limiter disabled, it’s very much likely to exceed 310kph.

Styling-wise, the new M5 looks like a meaner M3 on Steroids. However, it still looks significantly toned down when compared to the previous generation E60 M5 that had the controversial ‘hate it or love it’ Chris Bangle inspired styling. It looks aggressively muscular, with the usual BMW M styling cues, M drive buttons on the steering wheel, the quad exhaust pipes, a much more upscale interior with a simplified iDrive interface, headrest mounted displays, self-closing doors and a host of other features associated with cars in this price range.

Others To Consider: Mercedes E63 AMG, Cadillac CTS-V, Jaguar XFR, Audi S6 and the upcoming Lexus GS-F.
