Medan Rapinoe gave the Stars and the Stripes the lead in the 12th minute. The striker controlled the ball with ease, beat two players on her way and then firing from a long range, which deflected off the body of defender Laura Alleway on its way to goal.
USA experience goalie, Hope Solo denied Samantha Kerr the opportunity to level the score for the attacking Matildas. Lisa De Vanna pulled parity for Australia in the 27th minute after a great possessive play connecting from Michelle Heyman’s effort.
Back from the break, the US lifted their game thanks to the ever impressive Megan Rapinoe’s dribbling skills. Sydney Leroux set up Christen Press in the 61st minute to restore the lead for the Stars and Stripes.
The US last goal was a master class from none other but Megan Rapinoe in the 78th minute. She picked the ball in her own half, ran across the pitch, dribble past the last defender before hitting the ball past the helpless Barbieri in post for the Matildas.
The Matildas kept pressing the US high up the field, but could not find the net as the US walked away with a 3-1 win.
