Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary is the largest forest which covers 181.8 sq km. The meaning of the word Brahmagiri is “highest point”. It is situated on the borders of Kodagu district in Karnataka and Wayanad in Kerala. The best feature of this sanctuary is that we can enjoy trekking. The important plantations in this sanctuary are the bamboo trees. The temperature usually varies from 5 degrees to 32 degrees Celsius.

On an average the rainfall varies from 2500 to 6000 mm. Many animals are found here such as Slender Lions, Common otter, Cobra, Elephant, Leopard Cat, Wild Dog, Emerald Dove, Malabar Trogon, Black Bulbul, Brown Mongoose, Wild Pig and Jungle Cat. The greenery and the climate of this place are truly awesome.

If a person decides to go to the Sanctuary by road, then he needs to start from Bangalore and reach Mysore.

Later, move forward towards Hunsur, Srimangala, and Irupu and finally you can reach Brahmagiri. Alternative way is to start from Bangalore, go ahead towards Mysore, then Nanjangudu, Gundelpet, Sulthan Bathery, Mananthavady, Kattikulam, Thirunelli and finally Brahmagiri.

The distance between Bangalore to Brahmagiri through Hunsur and Gonikoppal is 275km.  If tourists come from far away places, they can take a flight to Bangalore, which is the nearest airport. The nearest place to this sanctuary is Gonikoppal, which is 18km in distance.

You can reach this sanctuary through bus or by car. Many charter bus rental services are available to make the journey comfortable.

Try booking bus tickets in advance. Many websites have the facility of online booking of bus tickets. The best place for people, who are interested in trekking, is Narimale Estate Guest House, which is in Gonikoppal.

The best time to visit Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary is from October to May from morning six clock to evening six. The best way to get accommodation is to contact the Deputy Conservator of Forests. Most of the school children visit this marvelous place and enjoy a lot. Bus tickets reservation has to be done in advance and at least three months prior to the journey. Bus tickets online booking can be done if we have a credit card/debit card and internet banking facility.

The important things that tourists need to keep in mind are always carry the telephone number of Forest Range Office. It can be helpful in the case of emergencies. When you go for trekking, carry food items and match boxes. Utensils will be provided by the Karnataka Government. As we need to take rest at night, carry enough number of blankets and pillows to protect from cold.

The forest department has issued some dos and don’ts, which must be followed strictly by the tourists. If you go by car, do not blow the horn in the forest. Do not drink alcohol or play loud music at the sanctuary.

Shopping in Karnataka is a memorable experience. You can also visit Omkareswara Temple, which is quite famous among the tourists, as the Linga is brought from Kasi. A visit to Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary is simply outstanding.
