mali rebels attack town

Bamako ? The leader of a Malian youth militia fighting the Islamic occupation of the country?s north is under arrest, a security source said on Friday. Mahamadou Diouara, the head of Bouyan Ba Hawi (?Better death than shame? in the Songhoi language), was reported to have been taken from his house during the night of August 25 by men in balaclavas.

Colleagues said earlier that Diouara had been ?kidnapped?. However, the security source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the militia leader had been arrested along with a fellow leader of the movement, Youssou Ndaou.

?Now we know where Dioura is, we are at ease,? said Almamy Alphamoye Haidara, president of the Committee of Youths Following the Crisis in the North, of which Dioura was also the head of security.

A statement from the security ministry on Thursday reported the dismantling of ?a military training camp for youths?, referring to that of the militia, during which 32 of the would-be fighters were arrested.
