Tanzanian President John Magufuli, who is also chairman of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party, said on Friday he will not tolerate corruption in the party.

“I will fight against corruption in the ruling party just as I am currently fighting against corruption in government,” Magufuli said when opening the 9th CCM women wing meeting in the capital Dodoma.

He urged all wings of the ruling party, including women, parents and the youth, not to elect corrupt leaders, saying such leaders will kill the party instead of building it to prosperity.

He said the party has been going through a renewal process by revisiting attitudes of its members in implementing its vision.

“I urge all party members to remember where we erred, the women wing we have now is not what it used to be in the past,” he said.

Magufuli made these remarks just a few days after he sent warning to members of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) against endorsing unqualified candidates for leadership positions at regional and national levels.

He made the warning to NEC members when the party’s high-level organ met in Dar es Salaam where it screened 3,004 candidates from regions to contest for 261 posts. Enditem
