The Tanzania Regulatory Authority (TCRA) on Thursday suspended three online television stations pending issuance of regulations for digital television.
James Kilaba, TCRA Director General, said in a statement that the Electronic and Postal Communications Act (Cap 306) requires providers of all such services to obtain permits from TCRA.
Kilaba directed digital stations, which were much loved in and outside the East African country, to forthwith stop providing TV services online.
The suspended TV services were Michuzi TV, AYO TV and Global TV.
The owners of the online digital services said they were shocked by the sudden order at a time when the new regulations had not been put in place.
They have requested for the permission to continue to temporarily provide services, while waiting for the regulations. Enditem
