Tanzanian authorities plan to roll out more preferential policies to invite investors to run the deteriorating bus rapid transit project in the port city of Dar es Salaam, an official announced on Monday.
Treasury Registrar Nehemiah Mchechu told a news conference here that the government is planning to invite at least four investors to run the bus rapid transit project and make it more efficient.
Bus rapid transit was introduced in 2016 in Dar es Salaam, a city of more than 5 million people, to address urban transportation challenges.
The Rapid Transit Public Limited Company operates a fleet of rapid transit buses that carry an average of 165,000 commuters daily. It serves the local community by providing safe and dependable passenger transportation. However, the company’s public commuter services have declined.
Mchechu added that plans are underway to secure 100 new buses to boost operations.
