Tajik President Emomali Rahmon is set to arrive here Wednesday night for a state visit to China at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Rahmon was born in October 1952 in Khatlon Province of Tajikistan. He served in the Soviet Union’s Pacific Fleet from 1971 to 1974. He graduated from the Tajik National University with a degree in economics in 1982.

Rahmon served as the chairman of Lenin Sovkhoz (Soviet state farm) in Danghara region from 1988 to 1992. He was elected a people’s representative in the Supreme Soviet of the Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic (SSR) in 1990.

He served as the Soviet executive committee chairman of people’s representatives in the Kulob District in 1992, and was later elected the chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the Tajik SSR in November 1992.

On Nov. 6, 1994, Rahmon was elected president of Tajikistan. He won the next three reelections respectively in 1999, 2006 and 2013. His current term will last till 2020.

Rahmon was awarded the title “Founder of Peace and National Unity, Leader of the Nation” by Tajikistan’s parliament in 2015.
