CHANETA Acting Secretary General, Rose Mkisi

Tanzania Amateur Netball Association (CHANETA) Acting Secretary General, Rose Mkisi, said Taifa Queens are expected to play against top sides including Bandari, JKT and Jeshi Stars. “We’ll also have international build-up matches but we’re going to start with the top local sides. As host we need to get well prepared and perform better in the tournament,” said Mkisi.

Mkisi confirmed that seven netballers that were summoned up last week to beef up the squad, have already joined their colleagues currently at the Filbert Bayi Hostel in Kibaha. She said the players, under the tutelage of experienced coach, Mary Protas, are in a spirited mood in Kibaha and they expect the best out of them.

Mkisi said the team would undergo-intensive training until three-weeks before the tournament, where the technical bench will pick the final 14 that will take part in the tournament involving teams from 16-African countries. She said plans are underway to recruit good coaches from neighbouring countries, who will team up with the local coaches in preparing the team for the continental showpiece.

The tournament will give Taifa Queens perform chance to qualify for next year’s Commonwealth Games as well as improve in the world ranking since the event is recognized by the International Netball Federation (IFNA). CHANETA are expected to build a special roof at the state-of-the-art stadium to allow teams play comfortably as during March-May period.

Dar es Salaam is usually characterized by seasonal rainfall. The organizers, Africa Netball have endorsed Tanzania hosting the event starting May 8, at the open stadium, whereas CHANETA promised to use the opportunity effectively.
