Thomas Dennerby, head coach of the female national team of Nigeria, Super Falcons, has said, he is looking forward to lifting the trophy for the first time in the final game against South Africa, in the ongoing African Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON), being hosted by Ghana.

Nigeria and South Africa would play in the finals of the competition at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday, December 1.

Coach Dennerby in an interview with GNA Sports said, it would be a joy to lift the trophy for the ninth time for Nigeria, but also a source of pride for him, in his first assignment on the continent.

“I don’t really speculate going into a game, because everything is possible in football, but it would be a great feeling coaching for the first time in Africa and winning a major trophy.

“I would be happy to lift the trophy,” he added.

South Africa beat Nigeria 1:0 in the first Group B game at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium and according to Dennerby, the finals won’t be about revenge but mentality to win.

“I will not say we are going to revenge our defeat to South Africa but the players are well motivated to win, hopefully and definitely, we would win.

“It is always hard to defend against a team that plays well, but we are determined to win, we would have to create and utilize our chances tomorrow and be more confident in our attacking with fast fluid passing football,” he added.

With both teams qualifying for the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) Women’s World Cup in France, 2019, the AWCON 2018 trophy is at stake for Nigeria for the ninth time and South Africa for the first time.
