Luis Suarez will miss the first four weeks of the season after injuring his knee in the Spanish Super Cup, Barcelona announced Thursday.

Barcelona were dealt a double injury blow as they fell to a 2-0 (5-1 aggregate) defeat on Wednesday against rivals Real Madrid, with Gerard Pique suffering a groin strain and in danger of missing the Sunday season opener against Real Betis.

“The Barca number 9 is set to miss the league games against Betis, Alaves, Espanyol and possibly the trip to Getafe also,” said Barcelona in a statement.

“Tests carried out on Gerard Pique confirm that the defender has a groin strain in his left leg and his recovery will decide his availability for the game against Betis.”
