Emir directs district, village, ward heads to prevent tree felling

The Emir of Katsina, Alhaji Abdul-Mumini Kabir, has directed district, village and ward heads in the emirate to assist in preventing tree felling in their domains.

Kabir gave the directive at a meeting with Alhaji Abdulwahab Sani-Store, the Special Adviser on Forestry to the state governor and 34 local government forestry officers in his palace on Wednesday in Katsina.

He said that traditional rulers in the emirate should mobilise and enlighten their subjects on the dangers of tree felling and the need to safeguard forest reserves.

He noted that trees had vital roles to play in protecting the environment as well as controlling desert encroachment, hence the need for a concerted effort to protect them.

He also advised forestry officers to join hands with traditional rulers to prevent indiscriminate felling of trees.

Kabir warned that anyone caught in the act would face the wrath of the law.

He directed the district heads to confer traditional title of ?Galadiman Daji? (Head of the Forestry) on forestry officers in their respective areas.

He said that doing so would encourage the officers to discharge their duties effectively.

In his remarks, Sani-Store said the meeting would provide a way forward in safeguarding the forest reserves.

He said that the state government had secured 2.5 million tree seedlings for distribution to district heads to share among their people for planting this year.

Sani-Store commended the emirate council for its support to the forestry department.
