Midfielder Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu has attributed the good treatment and respect for Ghanaian players in Italy to the trailblazing exploits of Stephen Appiah.

The former Black Stars captain is widely credited for opening up opportunities for Ghanaian players in Serie-A.

The former Hearts of Oak youngster rose through the ranks to play at the highest level in Italy before moving to Turkey to play for Fernabahce.

It was the exemplary life lead by Appiah that saw Udinese in particular give similar opportunities to players such as Sulley Muntari, Asamoah Gyan and Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu.

Badu who remains with the Zebrette says Appiah is still a popular figure at the club.

?Supporters of the club keep asking of Stephen Appiah anytime they meet you,? he said.

?His commitment and dedication to the cause of the club remains a major topic in the club.

?This has given some us special advantage in our career in Italy and we are grateful for his efforts.?

The former Ghana captain will be hosting an array of world football stars at his testimonial match being organized by Primeval Media on June 27.

And Badu believes the occasion is the best opportunity to give Appiah a befitting send off after announcing his retirement from active football earlier this year.

?He was a great player and a leader. We all benefited from exemplary leadership and we must all contribute towards the success of the match,? Badu added.

?I will be available for that match and l believe it will be great day for us to honour our dear captain.?
