The European Union  in conjunction with the  International  Center  for Migration Policy Development(ICMPD), Migration Dialogue  for  West Africa (MIDWA)   as well as  the International Labour Organization( ILO) and the IOM have commenced an expert meeting in Accra.

The experts from these organizations are in Ghana for a two-day-summit that will discuss, among other things, key issues affecting free movement of people and goods in the sub-region. The dialogue, is ongoing at the Holiday in hotel, and will also discuss opportunities for trade, legal and finance for ECOWAS citizens among others.

Commenting on the various trade barriers that undermine smooth intra-regional trade, the Economic Commissioner for Commerce at the ECOWAS Commission, Ahmed Hamid, challenged various  stakeholders in the sub region as well as the media to inform  ECOWAS citizens  about their rights to free movement  noting that  massive education is required to  sensitize the population in the sub region of their rights in the ECOWAS integration  agreement.

According to Hamid, there is the need for people in the sub region to know about their legal obligations as individuals and as a people.

Also present at the dialogue  is the Regional Director of the  International Office of Migration (IOM), Caemela Godeau, who disclosed that as a result of the massive migration of West Africans , it has become very imperative to call for policies  on regional  and national levels to protect people in the region.

The theme for the meeting is ?Free Movement of persons  for regional  integration and economic cooperation?.
