Michael Essien has been urged to return to the Black Stars

Ghana?s sports minister Elvis Afriyie Ankrah has made a passionate appeal to Michael Essien to make a quicker-than expected return to the national team.

The 30-year-old has not played for the Black Stars since 2010 after he asked to be excused from international duties suffering  career threatening injuries while playing for his country.

The Chelsea ace has confirmed he will announce his final decision regarding his long-term future with the Black Stars after his charity game in the country?s capital, Accra on June 8.

With the Black Stars involved in neck-to-neck race with Zambia to determine which of the two country finish top of their group, the country?s sports minister has appealed to the former Real Madrid loanee to reconsider his decision to return to the team sooner rather than later.

The Minister made the appeal when the Co-ordinator of the Michael Essien Foundation, Akosua Puni, presented a plaque of hope and inspiration to him in his office in Accra.

?I will like to take this opportunity to urge Michael Essien to reconsider his decision and return to the Black Stars,? Ankrah said

?We understand what he has gone through but we also believe that the nation needs him.

?I will therefore urge you to convey my message to him. I am sure you can propably communicate to him well what it means for us as a country for us to have him back.

?We need him in the national team. I will appeal to him to reconsider his current stance so we can have a solid team that will be capable of qualifying to the World Cup.?

Essien has hinted he could return for the potential World Cup decider against Zambia in September.

Calls for his return has grown incessant with many Ghanaians in no doubt his presence will boost the confidence of the team to pick the sole ticket available in group D, which will subsequently pave the way for the crucial  two-legged ties.
