Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has proposed legislation to set a cap on the number of Justices appointed to Ghana’s Supreme Court.

This proposal, which emphasizes the need for clarity and regulation in judicial appointments, could significantly impact Ghana’s judicial system.

Currently, Ghana’s constitution allows for nine Supreme Court Justices without specifying an upper limit.

In response, Bagbin has taken a proactive role in advocating for legal reforms to define this threshold, ensuring clarity and regulation in judicial appointments.

Addressing Parliament in Accra, Bagbin has underscored the importance of legislative intervention.

He has raised the crucial question of whether the Supreme Court should have 13, 15, 20, 40, or 100 Justices, considering Ghana’s population of 33 million.

The Speaker’s call comes in response to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s nomination of Justice Sophia Rosseta Bernasko Essah and Professor Richard Frimpong Oppong to replace retiring Justices Nii Ashie Kotey and Mariama Owusu.

Bagbin forwarded the nominations to Parliament’s Appointments Committee for review and subsequent deliberation.
