The 2026 Finalissima between Spain and Argentina has been cancelled after the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and organisers failed to agree on an alternative date and venue following the collapse of plans to hold the match in Qatar.

UEFA confirmed on Sunday that the fixture, which had been scheduled for March 27 at Lusail Stadium in Qatar, could not proceed because of the deteriorating political and security situation in the region. The US-Israeli strikes on Iran and subsequent retaliatory strikes across the Gulf disrupted air travel and forced Qatar to suspend football activities, making the original venue unworkable.

The Finalissima pits the winners of the UEFA European Championship against the champions of the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) Copa America. Spain, winners of UEFA Euro 2024, were set to face Argentina, champions of the 2024 Copa America, in a match that would have brought Lamine Yamal and Lionel Messi onto the same pitch for the first time.

UEFA explored several alternatives after Qatar became untenable. The first was to stage the match at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid on the original date with an equal split of supporters, but Argentina refused. The second was a two-legged format, one match in Madrid on March 27 and a return in Buenos Aires during an international window before the next editions of the Euros and Copa America in 2028. That proposal was also rejected.

A joint statement from CONMEBOL and the Argentine Football Association (AFA) said Argentina had accepted the idea of a neutral venue in Italy but proposed March 31 as the date, four days later than the original schedule. UEFA said that date proved unworkable, and the fixture was cancelled.

In its statement, UEFA said it was “a source of great disappointment that circumstances and timing have denied the teams of the chance to compete for this prestigious prize in Qatar.”

Argentina are the defending Finalissima holders, having beaten Italy 3-0 at Wembley Stadium in London when the competition was revived in 2022. France won the inaugural edition in 1985, when the competition was known as the Artemio Franchi Cup, while Argentina also lifted the trophy in 1993.

No new date for the next edition has been announced. The next Finalissima is expected to follow the 2028 European Championship and Copa America.
