A southern African regional bloc on Tuesday asked Britain to end “unlawful occupation” of the Chagos Archipelago and return it to Mauritius.

Without the islands, “the full decolonization of Africa is not complete,” according to a Southern African Development Community statement issued after a summit of its heads of state concluded in Botswana’s capital Gaborone.

Chagos archipelago, a group of islands in the Indian Ocean, was hived off Mauritius in the run-up to independence in 1965.

Mauritius has continued to claim its sovereignty over the islands. Enditem
