South Sudanese President Salva Kiir has formed a 30-member committee to spearhead the national dialogue aimed at forging reconciliation and helping end the three-year conflict.

In a presidential decree issued on Monday night, Kiir said the formation of the National Dialogue Steering Committee will develop the agenda for the dialogue.

“The formation of the National Dialogue Steering Committee has incorporated the participation of various South Sudanese such as retired politicians, religious leaders, technocrats and those still active in politics,” the decree said.

The aims of the initiative, he noted, are to save the country from disintegration and usher in a new era of peace, stability and prosperity.

Kiir said he will perform the duties of the Patron of the National Dialogue, a responsibility some members of the former detainees have opposed.

In the decree, Kiir appointed retired Catholic Emeritus Bishop Paride Taban and former Sudanese Vice President Moses Machar Kachuol as co-chairpersons to the committee.

He said the team will develop the agenda of the National Dialogue that is provided for within the framework of the Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (ARCISS) and not contravening the terms of the agreement, as well as to steer up the process of National Dialogue.

Kiir has issued a directive to both government and rebel forces to immediately cease hostilities, protect their fellow citizens and prepare the ground for a more peaceful, secure and joyous Christmas and New Year. Enditem
