Jacobs was placed on precautionary suspension in December after he was accused of assaulting a staff member.

He was the second senior official suspended by the ANC.

Late last month, ANC Western Cape Chairperson Marius Fransman was suspended pending an investigation into sexual harassment charges against him.

ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe announced that the party will deploy caretakers to the Western Cape to replace Fransman and Jacobs, while they are suspended.

The Western Cape is the only province that has been administered by the opposition Democratic Alliance (DA). The DA said the suspension of Jacobs “is an acknowledgement” that the ANC in the Western Cape “is in disarray”.
“The ANC in the Western Cape proves time and time again that it puts its own interests before the interests of our people. To the ANC Western Cape, the ANC comes first and everyone else comes second,” the DA said.

The scandals are expected to dampen the ANC’s reputation, particularly at a time when the party is gearing up for the 2016 municipal elections.

There are 257 municipalities and 4,392 wards which will be contested. The ANC is facing fierce competition from the DA and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

President Jacob Zuma has acknowledged that the elections will be the toughest for the ANC since 1994 when apartheid was brought to an end.

The ANC is facing a herculean task to maintain control over major metropolitans like Johannesburg and Pretoria. Enditem
