“We want to appeal to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration to prioritize this matter and do the correct thing by calling the parties to a facilitation process,” the union said on Monday.

It came after ASA Metals’ Dilokong Chrome Mine in Limpopo had informed NUM of the plan to retrench 700 workers.

“The NUM strongly condemns the behaviour of this arrogant company not to follow the due processes of the law in terms of the Labour Relations Act and Minerals and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA),” the union said.

Under the Labour Relations Act of 1995 and the MPRDA Act of 2002, a company has to inform the Minister of Minerals Resources if it anticipates to retrench 10 percent or more employees.

The NUM requests Minister of Mineral Resources Mosebenzi Zwane to intervene immediately.

The NUM said it was disappointed with the company for refusing to meet with the NUM leadership to try to resolve the problems.

The row highlights the rising labour tension in South Africa which has experienced hard economic conditions characterized by the depreciation of the rand. Enditem
