The 15-year-old was detained on an aircraft on Sunday, after her family had alerted authorities about her disappearance, state security minister David Mahlobo said.

The girl was reportedly in contact with IS via social media.

The teenager was later released into the care of her family, the minister said. State security is investigating IS recruitment and funding methods in South Africa.

“The recruitment and radicalization of particularly young people to take part in acts of terror is a growing global concern, and local law enforcement agencies will continue to work hard in (stopping) these,” Mahlobo said.
