South Africa’s Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has launched an investigation into the deaths of five people on Wednesday at a police station in Alexandra, north of Johannesburg. Police
The incident took place when an off-duty police officer shot dead four people at the police station, and later committed suicide after being chased by police.
The wife of the officer had gone to the police station accompanied by two people to file a case of domestic violence against him when the shooting took place, according to police.
“Incidences such as these draw attention to the challenges we face on a daily basis in policing, also the importance of (the influence of) domestic violence, that as a society we need to give much attention to dealing with issues related to domestic violence, ” National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega said.
The 32-year-old constable had worked as a guard at the Alexandra Magistrate Court, according to the South African Press Association.
